About Mediation

There are a wide range of mediation styles and models. To broadly generalize they can be looked at as being of a problem solving nature or of a relationship restoring nature.

Problem solving models tend to focus on the details and interests regarding tangible, quantifiable issues. The premise of the model is that a trained professional brings problem solving skills and strategies that parties themselves may not have.

Models that address restoring relationship focus on the quality of human interaction. The premise is that improving the quality of interaction, from destructive to constructive, will allow people to explore their issues more effectively without directives from the mediator.

These two styles can feel quite different and are appropriate for different people as well as different conflicts. Therefore it is important for you to interview potential mediators before choosing one for your particular situation. A mediator who prefers litigation cases or uses only a problem solving approach may not be a mediator you would choose for reconciliation and vice versa.
